The Story of Moonstone Pearl

This is an exceptionally rare paint which has a storied history within the BMW Group and automobiles offered through both the BMW Individual and Rolls-Royce Bespoke programmes. Moonstone Pearl by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a ‘commission-collection only’ exterior finish designed to evoke the appearance of stars in the night sky. The paint itself is an incredibly rare, premium pearlescent paint known for its chameleon-like ability to shift between silvery-blue, grey, and subtle light blue hues depending on lighting.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Origin

The paint made its most note-worthy public debut just over a decade ago with the 2014–2015 Suhail Collection, a series of Phantom, Ghost, and Wraith models inspired by the seventh-century Arab astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi and the bright Suhail star constellation.

Borrowed from the BMW Individual & ALPINA It was introduced as a signature, model-specific color for the Suhail Collection, contrasted with a hand-painted Turchese Blue coachline (representing the night sky) and a Suhail star emblem on the fenders.

BMW Group Origin

The color was prominently featured as a premium BMW Individual offering, with notable appearances at events like the 2014 Leipzig Auto Show. Unlike flat silver, Moonstone uses pearlescent pigments to create a multi-layered, "liquid" look that shifts with the light. It is often described as a "silver-blue tint" or a "pearlescent silver" that catches the eye without being overly loud.

The exclusivity of the paint cannot be understated. It is quite rare, particularly on M cars. For instance, only 160 BMW E9X M3s were produced with this paint code, with only 13 arriving in North America. While frequently associated with the F10 M5 and 6 Series, it has been used on many modern BMW models, including the Alpina B6. "Project Luna": A famous example of this paint is on a rare North American E92 M3 named "Project Luna," which highlights the color's exclusivity and its beauty when paired with high-end interior options.
